1951年4月2日在卡內基音樂廳，猶太裔的俄國鋼琴 Simon Barere ( 賽門‧巴瑞爾 )由奧曼第指揮費城管弦樂團伴奏演奏 葛利格A小調鋼琴協奏曲到一半時忽然腦溢血驟逝。自此，音樂界失去一位以超技演奏的傳奇人物。
巴瑞爾 學藝於俄國名師 Felix Blumenfeld 門下，霍洛維茲 也是 Blumenfeld 弟子。因此，巴瑞爾 常被和 霍洛維茲 相比較。以前曾看過有那種「當年要是 巴瑞爾 還在，霍洛維茲 得等著排隊領救濟金」的報導，其實要吹捧 巴瑞爾，也不用澎風到要踩 霍洛維茲 到這般地位，不過 兩人都有相同特點也是事實。巴瑞爾 也同樣擁有無堅不摧的超技，曲目不多且專精，以俄國和浪漫派作品為主，而演奏 李斯特 作品最為當時樂壇高度肯定，有幸的我們仍能由 雷明頓 唱片為紀念 巴瑞爾 逝世特集 ( EMINGTON RLP-199-35 , 1951年 LP )和 HMV 唱片來欣賞，像 Piano Sonata in B Minor 這首最難困的名曲， 彈得不單出神入化更是行有餘力可得知 Simon Barere 當年不可一世的豐釆。這唱片己由 VOX公司 重新轉製後 ( Turnabout / Vox Historical Series – THS 65001 ，1973年 LP )音效不錯，也值得收藏。
樂壇上以炫技為號召的鋼琴手不少，但最後淪為 "打仔 "為多。像 巴瑞爾 和 霍洛維茲 讀譜深入一再鑽研，演奏曲目雖少卻是精益求精。本唱片是 於 1934 ~36 HMV 全部錄音，都是 巴瑞爾 最擅長的以俄國和浪漫派作品，其中 最艱難名曲 Balakirev 的 伊斯拉美 Islamey - Oriental Fantasie (1869) 更是有1937年和 1941年 二次錄音。不怕您介意，這 Islamey 可是橫掃千軍萬夫莫敵。

The recording of the Liszt B minor Sonata was made on November 11, 1947. This recording and the one of the Funerailles were released by Don Gabor on Remington R-199-85 to commemorate the pianist on the occasion of the first anniversary of his death in 1952. The LP has the usual Remington anomalies but also shows that the performances were originally recorded on acetates and that the transfers are extremely well done. They fully convey the atmosphere of the live performance and still have the sound quality of a direct to disc recording with an intense, dramatic and full piano tone.

猶太裔的俄國鋼琴家賽門‧巴瑞爾（Simon Barere），1896年出生於奧德薩，十一歲即在奧德薩高級音樂學校就讀，十六歲獲准進入聖彼得堡音樂院，並隨葛拉茲諾夫學習。之後跟隨雷協替茲基（Theodor Leschetizky）女弟子艾希波芙（Annette Essipoff）兩年，最後拜在布魯門菲爾德（Felix Blumenfeld）門下。布魯門菲爾德曾經教導出霍洛維茲，他對巴瑞爾的演奏影響相當深遠。巴瑞爾學成後返回基輔音樂院擔任教授，但在史達林政權下終難發展其演奏事業，並被迫在酒館、戲院與餐廳等地方演奏。1930年藉著擔任文化大使身份舉家逃往德國，後輾轉至英國，且在畢勤爵士指揮下於1934年舉行首場音樂會，並錄製了第一張個人獨奏專輯。1936年十一月九日巴瑞爾在紐約卡內基首度登台，聲名大噪，其實力與權威受到當時樂壇高度肯定。1939年巴瑞爾定居美國，更認識當時正紅的拉赫曼尼諾夫、霍洛維茲與郭德夫斯基等名家。二次大戰後，陸續於1946至1948年間在卡內基音樂廳舉行演奏會。1951年四月在卡內基廳音樂會中途病逝，享年五十五歲。(VAI)
