鋼琴 組曲 (Suite,op.25)是 Schönberg  第一部採用革命性手法，完全以十二音列方法寫作的樂曲。而 (Serenade,op. 24) 是第二部用十二音列作曲的作品，根據佩托拉克(Francesco Petrarca, 1304-1374)的作品譜寫而成但是使用的卻是非常古老的歌詞，全曲由一位男中音及七重奏( 小提琴、中提琴、大提琴、曼陀鈴、吉他、豎笛(雙簧管)、低音豎笛等七件樂器 )的特殊組合，首演於1924年。

本唱片是原 1949年為慶祝 Schönberg  75歲生日在美國演奏的原班底，也是本曲目長久來的最佳選擇。

荀白克利用音階上的十二個音開創了十二音列的作曲法，徹底的瓦解了調性，將這十二個音任意排列都可以得到一個音列，其結果共可得到 479001600 個不同的音列。

十二音列的作品打破古典音樂的法則，對現代音樂產生的極大的影響，不過現在純粹以十二音列為手法的作品並不多。屬於此類的作曲家有：貝爾格（Alban Berg，1885~1935），魏本（Anton von Webern，1883~1945）。

　

他的學生們為他的理論寫下了一些使用音列的規則：
1.一個音列必須包含十二個音，每一個音則只能在該音列中出現一次，但如果當作持續低音貨顫音時例外。
2.音列除原形外，還可做逆行、倒影及逆行倒影的變形。
3.音列可單做旋律式的排列，也可以跟和聲混合排列。
4.音列可運用調式循法移位改變排列，結果可變成 48 個音列。如下表：有人乾脆直接稱它為「魔術方塊」。 

5.音的八度移動不受限制，當然又可以讓音列做出極多的變化。
6.為了音型需求，十二個音也能被分割成若干小組，如二組六音型，或三組四音型等。
