Alpine Symphony 完成於 1915年，首演由 Richard Strauss 自己指揮，這是他晚年最巨大型的管紘作品，被稱作最出色的「寫景」音樂，其實也包含著作者自己的心路歷程 。Alpine Symphony 由序奏 ( night , sunrise )加上二個部份的登山之旅 共22段組成，管紘編制龐大，包括 8 horns (horns 5-8 double Wagner tubas ),甚至為了音效加上了cowbells (牛鈴 ) , wind machine( 鼓風機 ) , thunder machine ( 雷鳴機 )和organ..等等。Strauss 自已曾為 Alpine Symphony 留下三次錄音(1925，1936，1941年)，以1941年那次動用了完整的管紘編制最佳，如不忌諱錄音品質貧乏現在二手 LP 仍可找到 ( Seraphim 60006 , MONO LP )- Record in 1941 。
Karl Böhm 是 Richard Strauss 的嫡傳弟子，畢生致力於 Strauss 音樂的推廣，他的錄音倍受敬重推崇， Alpine Symphony 早在 1939年已有錄音，本唱片是第二次灌錄，結構更進紮實牢固，是最佳版本之一。只是 DG 公司在1957年所錄音居然如此平庸且是 MONO 發行，多少是一絲遺憾。
要選擇指揮最好的就選 KARAJAN ( DG 2532015 ,1981年版)是場金壁輝煌完美演出，只是早期數碼錄音並不理想。執意要求完美錄音品質的，可由 MEHTA / LAPO ( DECCA SXL 6752 )得到滿足。 Richard Strauss : Alpine Symphony OP. 64
